The Great Auk
1963
This book is a nature novel which, by following the activities of
the last great auk known to exist, chronicles the life, natural
history and ultimate extinction of this large, penguin-like, flightless
bird, the last individual of the species being killed in 1844. The
book received much literary acclaim, won several awards, was condensed
in The Reader's Digest magazine and reprinted in numerous foreign
language editions. Originally published in hardcover in 1963 by
Little, Brown & Co., Boston, MA, and in paperback by New American
Library in 1964.
