The Savage Journey
1979
This young adult novel tells the story of 13-year-old Sarah Francis,
daughter of an eminent archaeologist, who is invited to accompany
him on a dig taking place in the Amazonian jungle where the ruins
of an ancient temple have been discovered. In the course of the
dig, some members of the party are stricken by a severe illness
and taken back to civilization by others of the party who are still
well, leaving only Dr. Francis and his daughter to continue digging
and guard the party's finds until their return. Dr. Francis, however,
is killed in a tragic accident and young Sarah, in attempting to
return to civilization on her own, mistakenly wanders ever deeper
into the Amazon jungle where she faces a great struggle to survive
in the wilds inhabited by savage wild animals and even more savage
tribes of headhunters, by whom she is captured. Originally published
